thyroid
At Modern Medicine and Modern Thyroid Clinic, there aren't many things we're more passionate about than helping people with their thyroid problems. Modern Thyroid Clinic is a division of Modern Medicine and was born simply out of deep need. I was repeatedly seeing patients who had spent 40 hours researching help for their unresolved or undiagnosed hypothyroid symptoms. Often they would fly across the country or drive clear across the state in hopes I could help them. Each week patients would say the words “do you know how long it took me to find you?” I’m not ok with that. I’ve been the person desperately searching for relief of my fatigue and brain fog-living in my pajamas. I remember getting on a three-month wait list in hopes the doctor could help me, but not even being sure. Years later, I know now that there are millions of people suffering just like I was. Unnecessarily suffering. I want to Modern Thyroid Clinic to be a place for those people, women, men, mothers, grandmothers and children.
I was 25 when I realized my life was in shambles and I could find no one to help me. I went to work everyday at 7am, got off around 3pm and spent the rest of the day in bed resting, preparing for the next day. Weekends were spent hardly getting out of my pajamas. I was depressed, foggy, burnt out and tired.
So tired.
I had no one to turn to. My primary care doctor wanted to reduce my thyroid medication based on my TSH, despite the fact that I was literally experiencing every-single-hypothyroidism-symptom.
Long story short, I found my knight in shining armor, Dr. Ron Manzanero, who later became my mentor. He gave me my life back and then gave me the knowledge to change others' lives. So now it's both my mission and my passion. I love it. I know what my thyroid patients are feeling. I can empathize with their struggle to find someone who can help them get their life back. The best part is that I actually get to help them get their life back, there's nothing better.

functional medicine
FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE IS A PERSONALIZED, SYSTEMS-ORIENTED MODEL THAT EMPOWERS PATIENTS AND PRACTITIONERS TO ACHIEVE THE HIGHEST EXPRESSION OF HEALTH BY WORKING IN COLLABORATION TO ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF DISEASE.
As taken from the website of The Institute for Functional Medicine.
See more at https://www.functionalmedicine.org
In short, functional medicine is most interested in the root cause of your illness, not simply treating your diagnosis. We take the time and have the knowledge and resources to help even the most complex medical problems.
Generally patients spend about 75 minutes with the provider at their first appointment, lab work specific to you is ordered at that time, and most patients are given an initial plan to help alleviate symptoms. After lab results return, patients come in for an in depth review of their labs and the treatment plan is then adjusted accordingly.
We work together to not only alleviate your symptoms but resolve the cause of them, getting you to your most healthy self.

integrative psychiatry
Over the last decade research has uncovered a vast amount of information as to the causes of mental illness, as well as ways to reduce mental health symptoms simply by correcting these underlying issues. Unfortunately, often these health problems are not being addressed, and many of the research-based treatment modalities continue to not be widely used in conventional psychiatry. Integrative medicine differs from the generic, treatment-centered approach of traditional western medicine by taking an individualized, patient-centered approach. It is based on a partnership between a healthcare provider and a patient, working toward overall wellness as well as uncovering and repairing the potential cause of mental health symptoms. It requires both the leadership of the provider and the active participation of the patient. The necessary time to gather all pertinent information from a patient is taken, often including lab work to get a clear picture of the patient's health status, and treating the entire patient and not a single symptom. Through judicious combinations of conventional and nonconventional approaches, integrative medicine offers a reasonable "middle way" in mental health care. Integrative psychiatry is highly individualized and values providing a structure and plan to keep patients on less or no medication. At the same time, the clinical value of psychotropic medications is not undermined and always taken into account but are used with care and consideration. However, long term plans often involve "root cause resolution," or looking for what may be causing or exacerbating mental health symptoms and resolving them, in order to provide a platform for patients not wanting to be committed to a lifetime of psychiatric medications. Frequently, after resolving these medical conditions patients naturally are not so reliant on medication. These plans are considered together, between the provider and patient to facilitate the goals of each patient individually.

Reviews (gosh I love my tribe):
~I feel so fortunate to have found McCall! She is professional and knowledgeable, but mostly dedicated to making you feel your best. I feel so much better after only having met her two weeks ago. Her appointments are thorough and comprehensive, leaving plenty of time for your questions..As I turn 70 next week, I am looking forward to a healthy, happy, energetic future thanks to McCall.
~I've been seeing McCall for over a year now, with my most recent visit coming in the last week. I think she is GREAT!!! How many Doctors will spend an hour going over lab results and consulting with you? I've never had that occur before i started seeing McCall. She is so knowledgeable on so many subjects. In my most recent visit, we discussed my diet, foods I consume and lifestyle. I learned so much about what I should and shouldn't be eating. I started implementing a lot of what I learned that day and just got the cook book she recommended. My wife and I have already dropped 5 lbs and feel great. When I left her office, I went and picked up a supplement she had suggested and have been taking it since.McCall promised to send me an email with a lot of information we had discussed. I got that email almost immediately.I would highly recommend her!!!
~I can say without a doubt that McCall has helped save my life. If that sounds dramatic to you that's ok, but it's true. I call her Double Mac, and as you can see from her picture, she clearly does not eat them b/c she's beautiful - outside AND inside. To explain how I feel about Double Mac I have to get personal, hopefully you'll be ok with this and not judgmental... Over a year ago I began struggling with my worst bout of depression I had ever experienced and I had no idea what to do or where to go. No psychiatrist's office was accepting my form of insurance and I could not afford $200+ and hour to see a psychiatrist. So, I had my name on waiting lists hoping one of them would start accepting my insurance in the mean time and call me back. Dr. Vache's office was one of those places, she had incredibly kind people who worked for her and saw that I had called several times in a span of 5 months. The front desk staff would call to check on me since they knew I was not receiving treatment. It was during one of these calls that they realized I was not aware that McCall worked for them (at the time, she is now on her own) and could see me at a reduced rate of what the Doctor could. I will not lie, I was hesitant. But, I had been on wait lists all around Austin trying to find a good and reputable place that took my insurance for too long. I was physically and emotionally worn out from white-knuckling through each and every day for the past 5 or more months. I thought McCall was a student in training or something, but of course I couldn't have been more wrong. McCall has excellent credentials, has years of experience, and truly listens to what you say you feel is happening and what you hope to accomplish. She did not give me any medicine until we ran some tests. She helped me find a place that would run the tests and accept my insurance - EEGs are pricey on their own. While we waited on test results, she encouraged me to try some major changes in my diet and she was 100% right - it was a huge help. Just changing my diet helped how I felt in major ways. She continually encourages me to stay away from some medicines and approves others. We do a lot of work with diet, exercise, vitamins/supplements, and then incredibly low doses of medicine. Note: Obviously if she felt I needed stronger doses or I felt I needed stronger doses of a medicine, she would work with me on that. HOWEVER, she knows my goals, she keeps my goals in mind, and she works with me on ways to achieve those goals. Now, while I still struggle with depression and anxiety (I have for over 10 years) for the first time in a very long time I feel like I have someone in my corner medically who understands what is going on with me not only physically, but mentally as well. I have started feeling so much better, she helped me find a therapist who I love and trust. Without her I have no idea where I would be, truly. She cares for me, as I am sure she does for all her patients, and I recommend without hesitation that you give her call.
~If you have a medical issue that you feel like a 15 minute Dr. visit will not solve I strongly recommend that you consider McCall McPherson. We have a very complicated psychiatric disorder we are dealing with and we are so thankful and lucky to have found McCall. She is so studied, researches cutting edge info, is obsessed with finding the root cause. I have every confidence that she will solve/correct they issues my daughter has been through that a team of Psychiatrist could not because the medical model does not allow for them to really find out what the underlying medical issue due to time along. Medicine should be practiced the way McCall practices every day.
~I recently went to McCall McPherson for the first time after searching for someone that could help me with my chronic depression and anxiety. It was important for me to find someone that would look at my past history with meds, genetics, hormones, diet, supplements, etc. McCall listened attentively to my complaints, spent sufficient time with me, explained things well, was very personable and knowledgable about what might be going on with me. She did not want to only put a bandaid on my problem with meds but seemed intent on finding the root cause. I look forward to continuing my healthcare with McCall.
~McCall McPherson is truly one of the best. I would highly recommend her (and do to all my family and friends). She is highly educated in functional medicine and is not one to take a traditional approach to health care. She listens intently to your concerns, educates you, and presents a solution.
~McCall McPherson is exactly what I have been looking for! Finally, I have found someone who can help with thyroid as well as other issues. She is unlike any psychiatrist I have ever seen. I am thrilled that my health is finally being guided by someone as smart, thorough, and kind as McCall.
~McCall McPherson is a great partner in my journey to restore my health. So glad to find a health care professional to really listen to my concerns and formulate a realistic plan of action. A great bonus is not having to wait forever for appointment times.
~I have gone from ill to better in just a few short months thanks to McCall's care! I'm looking forward to more improvement as the months pass!
FAQ
Do you accept insurance?
We do not accept insurance. We spend a great deal of time with patients, gathering all pertinent information, analyzing symptoms and data on a deep level, and take pride in educating patient and having ample time to hear and understand the state of their health. In this manner, we simply cannot operate in an insurance model of medicine which generally allots only 15 minutes per patient. We do, however, provide a Superbill upon request that you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network coverage. Of course, this varies per policy so please check with your insurance.

What kinds of medications do you prescribe?
Though we don't conform to one-size-fits all thyroid management, we do find that these types of medications, or other medications that include t3 in them, often work best for patients. We do a full analysis of how each person's thyroid is functioning and base treatment on that but in short, we are a fan of natural desiccated thyroid.
Check out Why Synthroid doesn't work on our You Tube channel.
Do you see patients virtually or only in office?
We are able to see anyone in Texas virtually 100% of the time. If you are out-of-state/country contact the office to get more information on becoming my patient.

genetic consults
This is for patients and non-patients alike, opening up access to people who even live out of state. I simply need the "raw DNA data from 23andme and I can pull about 30 pages of information from it. everything from your ability to process gluten to dairy to pesticides... To your risk of heart disease or neurological disorders. And of course, there is a full analysis of your "methylation" for those of you wondering.
The goal in this service is to determine your genetic weaknesses and focus on prevention and reversal of the activation of these genes by "epigenetic" measures.
The cost of this is $350 and it usually takes around 75 minutes.
